BETWEEN COLLAGES

BETWEEN
The Israeli artist Micha Ullman said: “In knowing how to demolish something you build yourself.” This sentence shaped me and my work. Destruction and transformation are a very significant part of this series of works. It is like trying to extract words or language from the silence or the inner being of an object. The resulting structure is a kind of letter that possesses a flowing form. One cannot interpret it precisely. It describes only itself. Its contour is its counter-contour. Its surrounding space is also the structure itself. A paradoxical situation that stands before us. The form is nourished by the reaction to an image. The cut is guided partly by me, partly by the image. What emerges is a magical form of the in-between.

PROCESS
An image is chosen – the eye wanders across it – an idea of dissection arises – the scalpel glides over the paper – the parts are pulled apart – the optimal position is found – points are marked on the cardboard – the two halves are fixed with spray adhesive – the resulting void is shaded with colored pencils.

INSPIRATION
In the best case, the works inspire movement. To trace the forms, to dance them, and to absorb them as a possibility of suppleness in the world.
The quotation by Hermann Hesse is very fitting here: “Soft is stronger than hard, water stronger than rock, love stronger than violence.” This softness, akin to water and meant to embody love, can be a source of inspiration for us. No stone can shape water, yet water can shape the stone.
